Honey finished her food while Graham was still heating the milk and she wandered out of the kitchen, apparently recovered from her ordeal. Graham poured shots of Bailey’s and cocoa into two mugs and carried them back to the den. Sam was curled up in the middle of the couch, a fleece blanket over her legs and Honey beside her, her head in Sam’s lap. The gas fire set into the wall opposite them flickered and danced. He stood and just took in the unexpectedly domestic scene for a few moments, happiness suffusing his chest.

“I hope it’s okay for her to be on the furniture,” Sam said, looking up. “She didn’t seem sneaky about it or anything, so I figured it was allowed.”

“It’s fine.” He handed her a mug and settled next to her. She sipped her cocoa and stroked Honey’s head with her free hand.

“This is delicious. Thank you.”

“My pleasure,” he said. Honey’s eyes sank closed and she sighed. “You make her very happy, you know.” And me, he wanted to add.

She ran a fingertip along the dog’s skull. “I still feel bad she ran off on my watch.”

“Don’t. Please. It probably only hasn’t happened with me because I know Winston all too well and can head him off before he has a chance to scare her.”

“You mentioned him. I should have kept an eye out. But I was just focused on her. She was so…embarrassed? Scared? All of the above?”

“Stop. All’s well that ends well. She’s safe and we’re all warm and dry now. You are warm, aren’t you?” She had been so cold, her clothes soaked through, her face pale and teeth chattering. But now her color was back, the light from the fire painting a lovely, rosy warmth across her skin.

She nodded, not taking her eyes from the dog. “This is so cozy. You’ll never get rid of me at this rate.”

He swallowed cocoa, considered his next words. “I’m not looking to get rid of you.”

She shot him a quick glance out of the corner of her eyes. “Really? You keep talking about taking me home.”

“Only because I thought it was what you wanted.”

She blew on her cocoa, took a sip, shook her head. “No. Not yet, anyway.”

“Good.”

“Good?” A tiny smile flickered at the corners of her lips and he realized how focused he’d been on her mouth. God, but he wanted to kiss her.

“Yeah. I like having you around.” His voice sounded rough in his own ears.

“Thanks. Today was fun. I mean, if you discount the panic and getting soaked. The wedding was lovely. The dancing lesson also.”

“I’m glad you enjoyed it.”

“I did. Your brothers are nice. So are their wives. I envy you, having so much family around.”

It didn’t feel like a lot to him, to just have his brothers and their wives. But it was more than she had.

“Is your aunt nearby?”

Sam nodded. “Until she gets old enough to retire and go to Arizona and be a Scandinavian snowbird.”

“Scandinavian snowbird?”

“New Yorkers have Florida. Midwesterners have Phoenix.
